âEdgelandsâ
Walking through a place on a regular basis builds on our connection to it and similar spaces. The rich autumnal smells of the woodland copses near my home bring back fond memories of going out with my grandmother to gather chestnuts and berries in our local woods â she baked a mean wild-berry fruit tart. It was the middle of winter and as I found a place to shelter I could feel the cold biting into the ends of my fingers. I remembered my grandmother talking about the branches overhead providing protection when the family pulled up the vardo (caravan) to rest overnight. The woodland, verges and hedgerows were useful for foraging seasonal fruit and nuts. Wood and grasses were used for fuel and to make things of use, such as pegs and baskets. Those memories are referenced in studies made on location, which led to the creation of âEdgelandsâ, a series of freehand drawn-stitched sketches combined with a transfer monotype process onto linen napkins.
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print process in which a thin layer of printing ink is applied to a toughened glass or Perspex plate with a roller. Lay a piece of paper or cloth onto the plate and tape it in place to hold it steady. Draw onto the material with a pencil or biro, and the ink is transferred where you have created the marks. The process allows for endless experimentation for the creation of marks using varying tools and surfaces.
